Known caveats

This page summarizes caveats that apply across many CardiacNexus phenotypes.

Cross-cutting caveats

  • Segmentation errors can propagate into multiple feature families.
  • Indexed values require reliable external variables such as height, weight, body surface area, or pressure.
  • Strain and torsion are more backend-sensitive than volume measurements.
  • Native T1 interpretation is acquisition-specific.
  • Flow features depend on plane placement and velocity encoding.
  • Reference ranges should be matched to analysis method and population.
  • Disease primers summarize interpretation patterns and should not be read as diagnostic criteria or management guidelines.
  • Planned features such as ECV, selected adipose tissue measures, and tagged MRI-derived mechanics should not be read as mature outputs until their pipeline status and validation evidence are documented.

Caveat by feature family

Feature familyMain caveat
Ventricular volume and massBasal slice rules and segmentation errors affect EDV, ESV, SV, EF, and mass together
Atrial phenotypesLong-axis coverage, pulmonary vein exclusion, and atrial boundary definitions vary across methods
Aortic structurePlane choice, landmark placement, and indexing convention influence interpretation
Aortic stiffnessPressure denominator and phase timing are essential for distensibility
Phase-contrast flowVENC, plane placement, and phase wrapping can affect velocity and regurgitation estimates
Native T1Values are sequence-, scanner-, and field-strength-dependent
Strain and torsionBackend, contour tracking, and timing conventions can change results
Tagged MRIRequires explicit tracking QC and regression checks before broad interpretation

Use page-specific caveats first

This page provides global warnings. Phenotype pages remain the source of truth for feature-specific QC and interpretation notes.

Evidence status caveat

Values labelled Verified source are still reference-context values rather than diagnostic cutoffs. Values labelled Method-dependent, Literature context, Not current output, or Needs verification require extra caution before they are used in clinical-facing text or figures.

Source audit

  • Caveats checked against the promoted phenotype pages, modality pages, methods pages, and docs/data/reference_sources.yml.
  • Output-contract caveats were checked against docs/data/output_column_inventory.yml and docs/data/phenotype_dictionary.yml.
  • No figures are displayed on this page, so figure permission is not a blocker for draft rollout.
  • Textbook context boundary: broad clinical textbook context is not surfaced here because this page summarizes implementation and interpretation boundaries rather than broad clinical background.
